Bribe Case of Performance Motors Employees – What Was It?

The bribe case that was come in the limelight in 2004-05 was related to the former performance motors employees who were charged with corruption. Singleton Marc Alexander, Patrick Pow Kwok Yun, & Chong Ann Teck are the three suspects, accused of receiving bribes from Teo Kian Hong, a Director of Teo Tian Seng Motor Credit Pte Ltd (TTS) and Kheh Thiam Hoo, Director of Skyway Credit & Leasing Pte Ltd.

Let’s discuss the entire case in details-

Singleton Marc Alexander was the former Managing Director of Performance Motors Ltd who reviews the yearly renewal of authorised dealership granted to local companies in Singapore and had the power to approve or terminate dealerships. According to the investigation carried out by CPIB, Alexander received two Rolex watches from Teo Kian Hong and in return, she hoped that Alexander would continue to appoint TTS as a dealer for distributing BMW cars. Later, Alexander received branded watches worth S$100,000, 3 Nokia handphones, and a sum of S$78,000.

Apart from Alexander, Teo had also bribed Patrick Pow. Pow was the Director of Sales and Marketing at Performance Motors Ltd who had the authority to recommend for renewal or termination of dealer agreements. He obtained branded watches with total worth S$4,165, a Nokia handphone worth S$1,388 and a loan of S$60,000.

Besides Teo, Pow is also accused of obtaining bribes from Kheh Thiam Hoo. Kheh’s company is the sole finance agent appointed by Performance Motors Ltd. Pow had received an S$13,390 Frank Muller watch for his birthday and two loans of $50,000 and $32,000 in return for maintaining a good business relationship and accepting proposals submitted by Skyway.

Chong Ann Teck, the former senior sales manager at Performance Motors Ltd had obtained an S$12,700 plasma TV set from Mr. Kheh to consider favourably the future business proposals of Skyway.

Patrick Pow & Chong Ann Teck was charged with corruptly obtaining gratification from Teo Kian Hong and Kheh Thiam Hoo as an inducement to re-appoint their companies as dealer and finance agent of Performance Motors Ltd respectively.
